Shark Hunters

Shark Fishing Industry
Growing due to depletion of other species, and rising demand for shark fin. Europe now supplies > 27% of fins imported into Hong Kong

Fishing methods
Sharks are caught by 'Longlining': 20-40 mile hooked & baited lines are deployed with radio marker buoys. Many sharks are endangered or 'vunerable'

Shark Fins
Highly sought after for shark-fin soup. Supposed to increase potency. In fact shark fins may cause sterility becuase of mercury contamination

Liver
Sharks, unlike bony fish, do not have a swim bladder. Their livers are full of oil which helps them float. Rich in vitamin A

Shark Skin
Made of thousands of tiny teeth. Once used as a type of leather called 'Shagreen'. Also used for extra grip on sword handles

  What you can do
Watch 'Shark Hunters' on National Geographic Channel, Mon 18th Feb
Until the shark fishing industry is sustainable: Never eat shark-fin soup and make a point of refusing to eat in places offerring it. If eating Fish&Chips never have 'Rock Salmon' or 'Huss', both pseudonyms for shark. Support the SharkTrust (www.sharktrust.org), WilAid (www.wilaid.org), SeaShepherds (www.seashepherds.org)
